EVENTS AND TRADITIONS

Marsala is a city rich in history and ancient customs left in inheritance by the past people. Customs, ways of do, songs, recipes, hand down of generation in generation.

Among these it surely detaches the Procession of Thursday Saint, one of the richest, spectacular and perhaps the more mysticism and felt in Sicily.

On the occasion of the Saint Easter and more precisely the Thursday Saint the city of Marsala changes face. The whole center is closed to the traffic and the city it populates him of people coming from the near countries, of pilgrims and believers, of tourists and photographers. All for the streets of the center waiting for the exit from the Church of Sant'Anna of the Procession of the Mysteries.

An old tradition more than 350 years. Religious and folklorist together it represents with human characters the Life, the Passion and the Death of Jesus, from the sermons to the miracles, from the betrayal of Giuda up to the “falls” under the weight of the Cross, that are surely among the most dramatic moments and full of pathos.

The procession is very suggestive; the characters, all rigorously in suits of epoch, they recite the sacred texts with great transport and emotion; the Veroniches, young girls with customs and precious jewels, create a many colored and spectacular scenography.

A contrast between sacred and profane, among faith and show to perpetuate the memory, to never forget what Christ has done for the humanity.

Madonna of the Cava: Saint Owner of Marsala, on January 19 is celebrated with a procession that turn for the streets of the center with small white statue. The statue has a particular history, it was recovered in fact after a dream premonitory and long searches in a well where Your sanctuary now rises.

St. Giovanni: Also it Saint Master of Marsala, on June 24 is celebrated. During the day the homonym Church is opened on the Waterfront Boeo, entirely restructured by now, already risen on a sacred considered zone in ancient times. From the Church of St. Giovanni it is in fact possible to enter, through a narrow burrow, to a cave where there is a small source… from here it is said that the Maga Sibilla in ancient times foretold the future and gave oracles. The day develops between the prayers of the believers and a procession for the streets of the center up to culminate in evening with a splendid show of fires of artifice on the sea.

Open wine cellars: Last weekend of May all the wine cellars of Marsala open the doors to the visitors to make to know the phase of the production, of the aging of their wines, among which the ‘Marsala ' famous all over the world. It is the occasion to feel the taste of our earth in the white wines and in the red, in those from table and from dessert, and to taste typical products.

It is the occasion to visit ancient Bagli completely restructured and turned into the establishments of wine, in a match between present and past, among modern and ancient traditions.
