The History of Marsala
Marsala D.O.C. has a long history and is interwoven with that particular Anglo-Saxon. In 1773, by chance or better for a storm, a wealthy businessman from Liverpool, John Woodhouse, was forced to take refuge in the port of Marsala and tasted the wine produced by local farmers. He found it excellent, similar to some fine wines of Spain and Portugal and decided to try to do it on the English. The first expedition was a success and Woodhouse decided to stay in Marsala and produce own wine. Rebuilt an old Baglio, and was born the first plant of Marsala wine. He followed other Englishmen, Ingham and Whitaker the best known, and created other plants for the production and distribution of Marsala. The monopoly of the British wine remained until in 1912, then an Italian, Vincenzo Florio, decided to enter the production and trade in Marsala. Even today the Cantine Florio, along with many others, are producing and exporting Marsala worldwide.
Tourists will be fascinated by wine, but also to everything that is behind the bottle, or wine cellars.
In Marsala are many wineries that are open to visitors, showing the manufacturing process, aging and bottling of wine, enjoy doing the traveler quality wines along with local produce of our lands and in some cases showing the charm of Bagli, structure Sicilian. Some plants are in fact ancient Bagli, lovingly restored, where past and modern are intertwined in harmony.
Infact now, entering in a Baglio is to take a trip into the past. Walking through the arches, barrels, old bottles, knowing the history and tradition of high quality wine tasting is a unique experience.
